In each region, the implementation of SDGs is context-specific, with developing countries like Georgia presenting their own unique challenges. Our partner Caucasus Environmental Network NGO (CENN) prepared two Spotlight Reports on SDG 6 “Clean Water and Sanitation” as well as on SDG 7 “Affordable and Clean Energy”, analysing the complex situation in the water and energy sector in Georgia by the example of Guria region in the western part of the country. In the first report on SDG 6, the author highlights the water supply challenges in Georgia and Guria, emphasising the need for legal, infrastructure, and capacity improvements to ensure access to safe water and sanitation for all. Against the backdrop of Georgia’s dependence on energy imports and the heavy use of firewood, the second report on SDG 7 stresses the significant hydropower potential of the country and its need for a greater investment in renewable energy sources. The report focuses on legislative trends, lingering issues, and potential solutions, with particular attention to the Guria region.
The “Spotlight Report on the Implementation of SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy in Georgia by example of Guria Region” is the result of the joint cooperation between CENN and Dekabristen e.V. (Germany) with support of the German Federal Foreign Office.
